The more you can do to improve the security of your house the better off you will be.

Of course, you shouldn't stop with just the installation of the alarm system. You also need to make sure that the rest of the security measures are up to par. This means that you will have to do a little footwork. Take a walk around your house and make sure that all of the locks are in good working order. This includes the locks on the windows, something that many people overlook when they are looking for chinks in their home's security. If you have a garage, a barn, or any other outbuildings as many people in rural areas do, then you will want to check the locks on these places as well.

Make sure that the lighting is sufficient as well. Some rural homes are miles away from the nearest neighbor and at night, the inky darkness can provide places for thieves to hide. The more lighting you have the fewer places a criminal will be able to conceal him or herself. You will get all the lighting that you need, but you won't have to get a second job to pay for the electricity!

Another thing that you should do, especially when you live in a rural area, is use your senses. Look for things that seem out of place, listen for sounds in the night that aren't part of the natural order, and if you have a bad feeling that something just isn't right, then you should trust your instinct. People developed these instincts to keep them safe; listen to them.
