Start to establish house rules - Let us say your house rule is that bedtime should be at 8 pm. Some specific triggers can set a child off. Try to look for that trigger resulting in your child's defiance and try to alter that pattern so that your child will be successful. In short, simply state the rule.

Avoid criticisms, arguing or squabbling. All you have to do first is for you to rearrange your schedules in order for you and your family to sit down for meals together even if it is once a week.
