Hosted Exchange: The Environmental Snowball Effect
Lets take business email for example: I mean, having a Hosted Exchange solution has always been dictated by technical and financial needs, but there’s more to Hosted Exchange solution than that; having your data hosted can contribute to your business being environmental-friendly without you even necessarily realising that this is the case. There’s a long debate with regards to how much Cloud-computing can contribute to reducing carbon footprint of IT infrastructures. The fact that multiple tenants are using the same infrastructure greatly favours the reducing power consumption of a cloud computing solution: in fact this means that a Hosted Exchange solution only consumes what is actually needed, as opposed to having a in-house server where you are obliged to have this server running even though there’s no one soliciting the servers. So, how can this solution work to help decrease the individual’s carbon footprint? In fact, companies are already using Hosted Exchange solution to enable their staff to work from home if they are unable to make it in to work. However, the trend nowadays is allowing staff to work from home: either because the company wants to reduce its carbon footprint - staff that don’t use their car to get to work will significantly decrease their carbon emissions or because they want to give some kind of work-life balance to their staff. Allowing work-from-home can be a simple idea, but it’s these simple ideas – enabled by a Hosted solution that can have tremendous effects on environmental consumption. - Firstly, if employees have the option to work from home, there will be less people driving in town centres: we know that cars are one of the biggest polluting devices that exist. As well as less people driving from A to B, this would result in less rush hour traffic and jams which all result in increased pollution. - Secondly, employees using a Hosted Exchange solution will be more inclined to utilise their travel time. Using public transport instead of relying on their own vehicle will allow this to be possible - they can now catch up on the move – arrange or re-arrange meetings, send critical email, make deals etc, all while sitting comfortably on the train for example - public transport of course being a much more environmentally friendly travel option. - On the Hosted Exchange side, the solution provider can implement a more energy - efficient solution on their infrastructure that will benefit all the clients. This is definitely a big win since not all companies can implement environmental-friendly IT infrastructure if they had to do it by themselves. By having the environmental-aspects centrally managed and implemented at the cloud computing side, there is a huge economy of scale: indeed, it’s more than common that tens or hundreds of tenants are sharing the same IT infrastructure. For a company that is environmental-friendly, choosing to remove the IT e-mail servers from their own installation, can not only drastically improve their power consumption as a whole, but by implementing these changes the environmental effects can snowball without the employees even being aware – which I’m sure they will of course! And for a company that has yet to implement the necessarily steps to improve their carbon footprint, a move over to a Hosted solution will allow you to confidently say that you are a company who actively acts upon reducing your energy consumption - all while saving you money and time.
