Hostess Hints

Having people over at your house and entertaining them, can be stressful and disruptive, not only to the hostess, but to the whole household. You have to make sure all of them are comfortable and entertained at all times. So just what do you do to keep them happy all the time?

To avoid a visit developing into something stressful, you should approach the visit like a business meeting and prepare for all events possible. If you do that, the actual visit will go smoothly and as hostess you can relax and enjoy the visit.

It does not matter if the visitors are close friends and family, a little preparation will go a long way in keeping you as hostess cool and calm, and allowing you to enjoy the visit with them.

Part of your preparation would be to make sure there are enough places to sit for all visitors, and then that there are plenty of refreshments and entertainment. If you know their preferences and the type of visit it is, you will know if they prefer alcoholic beverages, juice, soda or something hot like coffee, tea or hot chocolate. Depending on what kind of drinks you serve, you will provide something to eat as well. Savory snacks for the beer drinkers and sport watchers, something sweet like cake, pie, tart or biscuits for the coffee and tea drinkers. If your visitors are there to watch a football or other sports event with you on the television, you may want to prepare some quick snacks other than just crisps and peanuts. You might even have a whole meal prepared for your visitors, and then you have to decide if it will be a formal affair and all will sit down to eat, or a less formal affair where everyone just helps themselves and sit wherever they find a place and eat off their laps.

If there will be children under the guests as well, you would want to keep them out of the grownups way and happily entertained as well. If some of the children are old enough, appoint one as a “captain”. Depending on the time of day and the season, you can decide if you want to arrange some outdoor activities and entertainment for them, where they can play to their heart’s content and shout and scream little hearts out. You can serve them outside with juice and whatever snacks fit for children. If the weather doesn’t permit outdoor activity, you will have to plan on something indoors, taking into account that they can get loud and boisterous.

Having people over will mean they may want to use your bathroom and toilet. As hostess, you will have to provide for their every need, such as enough toilet paper, soap and clean towels. If you want to smarten up your bathroom, consider putting out some hand lotion and perhaps even a cologne and air freshener spray.

With a lot of people in the house, you may want to ensure your place smells nice, so burning scented candles can be an option, as long as you remember never to leave a burning candle unattended. However, don’t put out your expensive perfume out in the bathroom, you never know if some of the children might play with it.

Planning all these little things ahead of time, will make your time with your guests so much mor enjoyable.
