Household Lighting
For some unknown reason most people give the least attention to the lighting, instead concentrating on furnishings and decoration. However, for good living, lighting has to be done appropriately on a scientific basis so that no part of the house is left with dark shadows due to poor or inadequate lighting. Lighting has become a very important subject for scientists and due recognition has been given to the fact by continuous research that is being done in the laboratories in various universities and manufacturing companies. Different standards have been prescribed for different places according to the needs of the situation. For example household lighting has to ensure that apart from sufficient light in various rooms, there are no dazzling features at any place. The entire lighting in the house has to be adequate but at the same time soft. Researchers and manufacturer have fixed norms for the lumens required for different functions in the house such as reading, cooking etc. It is supposed that the contractor who is doing the construction is employing the latest standards in the matter of the house being constructed by them. Apart from the functions, household lighting is different in different rooms. The living room is kept subdued when few people are present there but when visitors arrive there should be provision for increasing the illumination level. The dining room had to be provided with very good lighting but without hurting the eyes. The children's playroom also needs bright lighting but their bedrooms should have a provision for a night lamp. The master bedroom is well-lit but goes soft when the occupants get ready to go to bed. One may like to read while lying in the bed and therefore table lamps are provided near the head of the bed so that main lighting can be switched off. Bathrooms and kitchens should always be well-lit with no need to reduce the level of illumination. It is also good to keep the courtyard surrounding the house well-lit. Fixtures and lamps have been developed to be fixed at various places in the room to give the maximum effect. There is need to conserve power and the lamps have undergone a sea change from the power guzzling incandescent lamps through fluorescent and CFL to the latest low power LEDs. Household lighting can be said to be a fine art.
