Household Self Storage Tips

If you have finalized your storage accommodations, now it is time to consider the main issue of packing. Before starting your packing, you must follow certain rules so that you can minimize your packing time and at the same time your things are packed properly. The life of your items is very much related to proper packing. You should use the right packing materials like boxes, tapes, plastic covers, bubble wraps etc to keep your goods safe. These accessories are generally available in all storing places or at any stationery shop. Here are a few tips to consider during packing. These are going to protect your household articles from getting damaged.

Clear the wardrobes, drawers, chests and cupboards for their storage purpose. You can put smaller delicate items in the drawers by wrapping them in newspaper or bubble wrap. In case of beds or tables, take off the legs to avoid breaking. It will be better to wrap them with newspaper or bubble wrap. Otherwise, you can drape a dust cover over the furniture. All the clothing material should be packed in a strong and sturdy box using plenty of naphthalene, to maintain the dryness. You can also use specific wardrobe boxes, which are available at some of the storing centers.

You should take extra care for storage of electronic appliances. Any freezing system should be thoroughly cleaned and dehumidified using baking powder and water. The door should be kept open. To pack your electrical devices, it is better to use the original box. Otherwise you can wrap all the parts individually with bubble wrap, and place them inside the box filling up the unused space with newspaper, cloth or thermocol. In case of any battery operated device take out the battery. There is nothing like using the original box with thermocol stuffing for packing the computer, as this is the most sensitive and delicate item.

Storage of fragile articles is another part to be careful of. Make a cushioned layer inside the box with cloth before putting them. Individually wrap all crockery with bubble wrap. Put plenty of crumpled newspaper to secure these delicate items. Fill the box to its full. Tape the box properly and label it as fragile, so that proper attention is maintained to these containers. You will also get specifically designed dish pack boxes at many storing center. In case of mirrors, screens and paintings, keep them vertically after wrapping them with bubble wrap. Wrap your silver cutlery set using non acid tissue paper or plastic sheet.

For storage of books, copies and files first cover the inside of the box by placing plastic sheet. Place the books on its flat side, and put plenty of naphthalene to avoid moisture and insects. Do not overfill the box as it will be too heavy to carry. Clean and wipe all metal tools using machine oil to guard from rust. If possible, ties them in a bundle so that none of these gets lost. Do not store any combustible, explosive or dangerous item, which could be harmful to everybody like acid, petrol, paint etc.

Finally, list out all the storing containers mentioning which box storing what. This is going to be the only reference document, once you have given them for storing. Before signing the agreement, read it thoroughly, so that you can have 100 percent peace of mind.
