How Broadband And Satellite Internet Differ

The choices for internet providers these days has certainly grown in number. And this can make it confusing to try and differentiate between them. Some companies may offer the same type of internet service that you enjoy now with a few differences, while others offer a different product altogether. You may find that you can get a better deal from a satellite provider who offers free equipment than a cable company who supplies discounted service from online subscribers.

Choosing the right connection for you doesn't have to be confusing; all it takes is to understand the difference between broadband and satellite service.

Broadband Defined
The term 'broadband' refers more to the data allowance than type of internet connection itself. Broadband connections access multiple channels which allow for more data to be used reliably per customer. So for example, a dial-up connection would only access a single channel, which could cause frequent disconnection and long waits for the modem to find an alternate connection if many people were online at once. But broadband offers high bandwidth, which is the amount of data that's transmitted and received per second that a person is online.

There are various types of broadband connection. Even those customers who use a wireless router can be counted among broadband users, as this is how many broadband connections are broadcast.

The Satellite Service Difference
Broadband is used by almost all of today's satellite internet providers to transmit the internet signal. But satellite isn't the only type of broadband there is. Other types such as DSL or cable internet require the use of a cable of some sort in addition to a modem. But satellite uses a receiver and a dish.

Are there many differences between other broadband types and satellite? Not really:

• Users on land-line broadband will experience a quicker response during peak times than satellite users
• Satellite connections can make the internet available in more rural locations than land line types, due to their ability to connect directly to a computer
• The cost of satellite can often be more, because the cost required to transmit this kind of signal is higher

Broadband Or Satellite?
It really all comes down to the convenience of a connection when you're ready to choose one, as well as how you use the internet - at home or everywhere. Those who get online at home find that a land-based connection like cable works best for them. And those who travel may enjoy the convenience of satellite internet more.
