How Cosmetic Dentistry Deals With Deformities Of The Face

While cosmetic dentistry is best known as an elective procedure used to improve aesthetics it can be a vital surgery for those born with deformities or experience tragic incidents that damage the facial structure.

In periodontal procedure the cosmetic dentist works with the fundamental structure of the mouth and face including bone grafts, gum grafts and other procedures that correct or repair those factors missing or damaged. In some cases this work is needed due to damage sustained by eating disorders, drugs or other pathological conditions.

Periodontal procedure is often preliminary to other plastic surgery and done in close collaboration with that field of surgery.

Once basic structure has been established or reconstructed, the cosmetic dentist will often elect to use dental implants, posts that are attached to the bone. If there is enough bone structure available this is a very desirable alternative to dentures or bridges as custom made new crowns can be directly attached to the dental implants. Dental implants feel like natural teeth and with careful oral hygiene will last a very long time.

Ceramic bonding is a strong and reliable technology for attaching artificial crowns to existing teeth. A crown is applied after a tooth is shaved down on all sides and is completely covered by a substance that is made of gold or porcelain. Ceramic bonding uses different techniques depending on the position and size of the bond within the mouth.

Porcelain crowns have qualities similar to natural teeth such as color, translucency and wear characteristics and need to be bonded securely and stably to be truly functional. Often existing teeth will be reshaped or enhanced with porcelain veneers which enable the cosmetic dentist to repair, rebuild, resurface and reshape teeth. Custom fitted and colored porcelain is bonded to the teeth and can be used to correct gaps, adjust bite and resolve discoloration issues.

Further, porcelain veneers, properly fitted and colored allow a patient to have a beautiful new smile in a very short time. New porcelain crowns have to be matched in tone and color to any existing teeth. Ideally this matching is done with computerized aid, enabling the dental laboratory to obtain very careful matching.

In some cases a dental bridge is a more appropriate solution. If there are teeth in back and in front of missing teeth, a bridge can be made. These existing teeth are shaved down and fitted with crowns between which a new piece or bridge is created. It is cemented in place and it is not removable. It usually feels like real teeth. Bulky unnatural looking bridges along with the negative emotional impact of such devices are a thing of the past.
