How Do You Define Juggalo?

Much has been written on the topic of how to define Juggalos and Juggalettes. Journalists have mostly targeted the low hanging fruit when deciding how they should define Juggalos and Juggalettes, i.e. the face paint, the faygo, their geographical concentration, etc. But how do those not ingrained in the warping media define Juggalos and Juggalettes. How do you define Juggalos and Juggalettes?

One thing is for sure, Juggalos and Juggalettes are not what comes to mind when you imagine the music heard on hot hip hop stations. Hot hip hop usually pertains to music that’s selling hot, or hot on the top of the charts.

The fans of this so-called hot hip hop are like you would imagine; members of mainstream, pop culture who flock to music seen on media channels like MTV and heard on the radio. If one were to define Juggalos and Juggalettes, these type of people -- those lusting after hot hip hop -- would not be included.

However, if you like distorting the definition of hot hip hop to include the hip hop fans who themselves are “hot” in the sexual sense, then you would be able to include Juggalettes! Anyone who’s ever trekked to the annual Gathering of the Juggalos festival knows to define Juggalos, and more importantly, Juggalettes.

A Juggalette is nothing more than a female ICP fan, but they participate in activities like oil wrestling and beauty pageants at this annual congregation. And yes, many Juggalos and even outsiders who wouldn’t have the first clue as to define Juggalos and Juggalettes, find them hot. Hot hip hop fans they are, but not fans of hot hip hop.

So if Faygo and face paint is not all there is to accurately define a Juggalo, what else should be used? To start, it’s necessary to move away from the material objects always referred to when one defines Juggalo.

The most important aspect of Juggalos and Juggalettes is something intangible: their family pride. A collection of the misunderstood, this group of people get along so well together because they share that misfit sentiment. This trait is clearly intangible, but is essential to include when asked to define Juggalo.

Secondly, and most importantly, is the music. Horror rap may not be the traditional hot hip hop you hear on the radio, but that’s exactly why Juggalos and Juggalettes flock to it. They are unique and individual people, and appreciate art that connects with them, not art that panders to everyone with generic content and unoriginal styles. Even though Juggalettes may be hot hip hop (in this case, horror rap) fans, they are very rarely fans of hot hip hop.

When one defines Juggalo and includes these essential elements, the picture becomes much clearer. A family of original people who appreciate unique art. The add-ons like Faygo, face paint, hatchet man tattoos, and geographical concentration help to define Juggalo flare and are good to be knowledgeable on, but are by no means the core of this movement.
