How Does Wind Power Create Electricity?

Wind power is going to be critical to our planet in the near future but do you actually know how wind power works? At first glance it appears pretty self explanatory but in actuality, there is a lot more involved. This type of energy can not only save us a lot of money on our electric bills, but it will also play an essential part in preserving our earth.

Even though air just looks like it is there and is not really anything tangible, the truth is that air is actually a liquid that is made of gas particles. Other fluids that we are familiar with have particles that are liquid. We can turn these gas particles into energy because as the wind gusts, kinetic energy is created which then can be harnessed and converted into power.

The way that this wind power is captured is by using turbine blades that are attached to a shaft. This shaft is then fitted to a generator which then turns this energy into electrical energy which can be used for power. At it's core, wind power is some kind of energy that is captured and turned into a different type of energy.

The most essential part of this process, besides wind which is fairly apparent, is the turbine blades that are whirled by the wind. These turbine blades are designed not unlike the wings on an airplane. The design of the blades is extremely critical but not the only element. The other crucial component is simply the diameter of the blade. The larger the blade is, the more energy is captured and more power can be generated for us in the form of electrical energy.

By having a blade diameter that is double the size of another, we can gain power output by up to four times! Much also depends on on where you live to figure out the correct blade size. In areas with low wind levels, small blades work better because more wind is necessary to drive the larger turbine blades. Then again, if it is constantly extremely windy in your area, using the biggest blades you can is ideal because you will generate the most power this way.

There is obviously more involved with how wind power is produced but this gives you the basics of how electricity is produced from the wind. Wind energy is getting more popular not only with huge utility companies, but also with the average homeowner who is looking to cut costs. Today is a wonderful time to do as much research as you can about wind power so you will be able to make informed decisions in the future.
