How Fine Art Photographers Create Art

What are fine art photographers? To answer this question, we must first look at the words “fine art”.

Fine art is a creation. It is a masterful painting, a thought provoking sculpture or a fluid drawing. Art is subjective and means different things to different people, however, we can all agree that art is something that moves us. In that regard, Michelangelo’s David is fine art, as is Damien Hirst’s circles. So what do fine art photographers do? Do they take photographs of fine art?

As amusing as that would be, fine art photographers do not go around snapping pictures of great artwork to pass them off as their own fine art creations! These photographers create art with their cameras. They take iconic, beautiful and unique photographs that are works of art in their own right.

You may be wondering if fine art photographers have special skills or if anyone can take a photo and call it fine art. Like all art forms, anyone can do it, but only a select few will excel at it. Anyone can take up a paintbrush and apply paint to a canvas, but how many of us can turn out a true work of valuable art? The difference between a dabbler and a painter is talent. The same rings true for fine art photographers. Two people can aim a camera at the same subject and get two different results. Fine art photographers know how the play of light on the subject, the tilt of a head, the focus on a color, and the split second timing can take a photograph from a snapshot to a work of art. Fine art photographs seem to have a special talent for knowing just when to click the shutter to capture their subject. Their photographs stop time at the most critical moments and the results are more often than not completely breath taking.

What are some of the ways fine art photographers turn photographs into art? In some cases this is achieved through patience. They lie in wait for their subject to do just the right thing. If photographing a child they may observe their subject through the lens until they see that perfect expression; with a quick press of the finger the expression is immortalized. They also create art by setting the perfect scene. A portrait against a white or black backdrop or a group in a beautiful garden can be carefully planned so that all the details work together to make the perfect picture. There are times, however, when the photographer just happens to be in the right place at the right moment and takes a photo that makes history (example: the end of war photo of the solider kissing the nurse).

Fine art photographers are a specialized type of artist that do not use paint, brushes, oils, canvas, pencils or clay to create. They use time and they make it stop. They take these moments in time and display them. We observe, we feel emotion, and we marvel at the many ways we can enjoy fine art.
