How Leather Is Graded

If you know anything about leather furniture then you already know that leather is graded by quality. There are different types of leather that comes from other parts of the hide. The outer layers are the better quality and the inner layers are lower grade but just as good when it comes to looks and durability. There are also small pieces that are the cheapest and lowest grade. These grades are divided into four, Full grade leather, Top grade leather, Split Grain and Bonded.

I will start to talk about the highest grade leather which is Full Grade leather. If you are looking for the softest and most natural looking then this is what you should ask for. Extra care is needed for this type of leather because it doesn't age as well as the others do. Even though it is the best it is also the most delicate. This part of leather comes from the sides of the cow's body which may not have an even pattern. Some might like this look with areas that are darker than others but some people would rather a uniform look.

The next best leather for furniture you can get which will give you a uniform look is called Top Grain. This is great leather that can last a very long time because it isn't effected by sunlight and isn't as delicate. Top grain will give you durability and comfort with beauty. This leather is great for those who want the best and longest lasting.

The third grade of leather on the list is Split Grain. They get this leather from the inner part of the hide. These are not as large as the Top or the Full but still large enough to put together and still be sturdy. That is where it got its name Split Grain because at some points they are unnoticeably split. Anytime you see something with a label that says Genuine Leather, this is the type it is referred to.

Bonded leather is made from left over pieces of animal skin from the lowest part the body. This leather is not commonly used to make furniture but used to make other things like shoes or clothing.

When you are looking for good leather furniture these are the only four things you need to learn to identify, Full grain, top grain, split grain and bonded leather. Once you know the differences between all of them then you are ready to shop for leather furniture.
