If you work in any area of the media arts, there is a high possibility that you will be working with a 3D model at some time during your career. 3D models are formed when you change a polygon mesh into different scenes, objects, and characters that are needed in the various areas of media, such as print, the internet, and entertainment. If you are looking to start a career in the media arts, you must be able to do several things.

The requirements for the different types of media varies, but most will require you to have a background and experience in art. If you are creating a 3D model, you will need to know how to draw, whether it is through college courses or drawing practice at home. For example, if you desire to have a career at a studio that specializes in animation, you would need to have experience in clay modeling or animatronics.

If you want to have a career creating 3D models in the media arts field, you will need to possess four main traits. These are patience because it takes time to build up the experience that you need to get a good job in the media industry. It may take your entire life to master the various steps in creating the models. A beginner does not start at the same level as a professional designer. You also have to pay close attention to details, as the finished product needs to look just like the person or thing you are trying to portray. A good work ethic helps as well, as it takes time and effort to create a good 3D model because you want to make sure that your piece is complete. Finally, you will need to be able to accept the criticism from others in your field, as artists can be harsh in their criticism.

Not only is is important that you possess certain qualities, but also you must obtain the necessary skills. Some of these are modeling so that you can create the mesh to base your model on; animation, as you need to be able to get your 3D model to move frame by frame; texturing, where you will change the features of the mesh by painting and shading it; and rendering, which adds the lighting so that the special effects can be created to the model.

When you have a goal of becoming a professional 3D modeler for the media arts you must be able to have the qualities and skills necessary so that you can be the best modeling professional in your field.
