How Many Stamps Does It Take To Mail A Piece Of Furniture?

How many stamps does it take to mail furniture long distance? The answer is: More than all the tea in China.

Confused? Hey, so are we.

No one knows how much tea is in China, and no one can slap a bunch of stamps on a dining room table, chair, desk or armoire and stuff it in a mailbox. Your local post office will think you’re nuts. More important, you either need to move such items yourself, or use a company that is experienced with small shipments of larger furniture items.

Do-It-Yourself
• If you decide on a DIY approach, first remove all glass tops, shelves or bed frames and keep the hardware in separate plastic bags.
• Next, wrap the furniture with bubble wrap, be sure to use cardboard edge protectors, and shrink wrap or tape the whole thing with packing tape. You can buy the materials online, often with next-day delivery.
• Be sure to call a truck rental company in advance to reserve a vehicle especially if your transport day of choice is a weekend.
• Do not slide or drag furniture along the hardwood floor. Use a carpeted dolly or furniture glides for furniture with a flat surface.
• Have two strong people – or more! – available to help at both the pickup and destination sites. Load the largest and heaviest items first on the floor against the front wall of the truck. Sofas may be placed vertically on their ends to achieve a tightly loaded truck. Otherwise, do not place any item in the truck upside down or on its side. Remove drawers before moving dressers and cabinets. Once these items are on the truck, replace the drawers so they aren't damaged while the truck is in transit. Make sure to keep the balance by placing heavy objects on both sides of the truck.

Small Move Specialist
• If you’d rather outsource the work, engage a professional small move specialist. Avoid fly-by-night freelancers and large national moving companies alike. The former can’t be trusted, and the latter will cost you and armoire and a leg.
• Most of these skilled experts will provide a shipping quote on their website or by phone. Enter or provide the weight of the shipment, originating ZIP code, destination ZIP code and an inventory of the items in order to receive a quote. The shipper may be able to estimate weights, but the easiest way to estimate it yourself is by simply look up a similar item online.
• It’s important to note that most movers base their charges on minimum weights, often 1,000 lbs. or more. If you only ship a few items, look for a shipper with a low minimum weight – as little as 100 lbs. You’ll save significantly.
• A small move specialist will offer the stress-free option of a two-man, professional team that will come inside, prepare the furniture for transport, load the truck, and deliver inside at destination.
