How Marriage Changed Over The Years

When anyone says “traditional English weddings,” various images of churches, luxury cars, tuxedos, a crying mother and a cake with several tiers come to mind. It is the mental image I have which is not necessarily present anymore with more modern weddings. In a way, weddings have changed a lot over the years. The ceremony, vows, receptions and personalised gifts are still there, but they are quite different from those in the past. The reasons behind this are easy to see as well. Culturally, society has changed which is caused by the mix of different cultures. This led to informality and the decline of the church’s role. There are now a lot different types of weddings.

Approximately thirty three percent of the weddings these days are still held in the church. These are still a lot like traditional English weddings. On the other hand, civil wedding also exist which only takes place in a council building’s registry office. Homosexual couples tend to go for this type of wedding. There is not much magic and glamor in this type of wedding. However, more practical couples are fine with that. If you can still recall, Camilla and Prince Charles tied the knot in this manner. Weddings traditionally take place in one venue with a separate reception in a hotel. For practical reasons, there are couples who choose to get married in the hotel and celebrate the wedding in the same place. These can be called all in one weddings. Theme weddings are also becoming more popular. I remember a more recent wedding of a friend of mine. It had a Lord of the Rings or fantasy theme. The menu, setting, clothes and presents tend to be governed by the theme as well. That was a beautiful and unforgettable wedding. Another popular theme would be the Robin Hood themed wedding. Other popular themes include old west, Roman and biker weddings. Last, there are weddings that can take place out of town or even out of the country. Some people get married in Las Vegas, tropical beach or a beautiful garden in the country.

Regardless of the venue and type of ceremony, most weddings will still include a form of celebration. For themed weddings, more creative gift ideas might be needed, but not really necessary. You can always get them something meaningful that will remind the couple of their special day. Furthermore, most people tend to be more practical these days.
