While working as a bouncer in his hometown he decided to change his name to hide his identity (a requirement for the job), as his real name is Mark Vincent. He shorted his surname to 'Vin' and turned his surname into 'Diesel' becuase of the energetic character people say he possessed.
As Vin was a bouncer many people expect him to be tall.
