How To Be A Top Copywriter

Back To Basics

'Copywriting' is a word used to describe the writing of copy used in advertisements, promotions, and publicity announcements. The word itself is enough to scare some people off when they consider that they're going to have to write some copy in order to get their product or service sold to the buying public.

The easy way out, of course, is to outsource your copywriting to a professional ad agency or freelance copywriter. There is nothing wrong with taking that approach, but the person who knows his product or service best is the 'owner' of that product or service. Even if you're involved in affiliate sales, you should learn to write the copy that will eventually do the best job of converting your prospects into buyers.

Don't Worry Too Much About The Words

While high conversion copywriting does call for the use of effective words and phrases in order to produce the desired sales results, it nevertheless follows that the buyer is not so concerned about 'words'. Rather, what the buyer is looking for is 'information' ... not necessarily 'words that sell'. And that is one of the big secrets to great copywriting ... information! Forget the 'hype' and give your buyers the information they are seeking. You'll be miles ahead of the 'hypie' copywriters who use the 'hard sell' in their offers.

If you offer your buyers information that can solve their immediate needs or wants, it doesn't matter so much what words you use to describe your solution. They just want to learn that you, in fact, really have the answer to their problems.

This is not to say that certain rules of good copywriting are nonexistent. In truth you can learn the secrets of top copywriters through some study of their work. The top copywriters tend to follow a pattern or system of writing that grabs the buyers' attention and leads them through a convincing presentation, resulting in the sale.

Copywriting Is Like A Sales Presentation

There are long-standing rules of selling that follow definitive elements required to close a sale. The same holds true in writing effective copy for ads and promotions.
That is why copywriting and sales presentations are nearly one and the same.

Here are the critical elements of selling that can be applied equally to copywriting:

1. Attention
2. Interest
3. Desire
4. Conviction
5. Action (a call to action ... asking for the order)

Elements Of Effective Copywriting

> Headline (must grab buyer's attention and interest)
> Subheadline (not always used, but sometimes to further build interest)
> Body (instill desire and convince buyer with testimonials, guarantees, etc.)
> Closing (a call to action ... never forget to 'ask for the order' ... politely!)

Of these four elements the Headline is the most important in getting your buyer involved with your offer. If the headline fails to grab attention, there will be no conversion of your prospect into a buyer.

One Of The Secrets To Becoming A Top Copywriter

If you can read and write, you can learn the art of copywriting. Not only is it fun to do, but it can be very rewarding as well. Once you learn the secrets of high conversion copywriting, the world can be your oyster.

There isn't space now to delve into the many secrets of top copywriting, but here's a little secret that can get you on your way very quickly. If you split 'copywriting' in two, you get 'copy' and 'writing'. So, to speed the process of becoming a top copywriter and thus produce high converting copy that lets the buyer know what your offer can do for them ... all you need to do is 'copy' the 'writing' of top copywriters.

Read the ads you see online, in newspapers, in magazines, on TV ... and then simply copy their writing. You'll soon become proficient at copying the most effective ads and promotions. A word of caution, however: do NOT copy word for word what others have written in their ads. You may be found guilty of infringing on the copyrights of others. This is a huge no-no. You need to make a few changes to what you're writing, so that it becomes original material by you.
