How To Beat Your Winter Heating Bill In 4 Simple Steps

Looking for an extra edge to reign in your seemingly out of control utility bills but can't seem to shake the heat habit? You're in luck. Here's 4 simple to follow ways to reduce your heating costs right now without having to sacrifice your comfort to do it.

1. Only heat the first floor during the day

If you have a multiple story home, this is an easy fix. With the average 2+ story home containing bedrooms upstairs and family rooms downstairs, many people simply do not need to be heating the upper portion of their home during the day. It's easy to shut off the heat to this area of your home for 6-8 hours a day, reaping good rewards on your utility bill.

2. Perform a daily check on closed doors

Another quick way to ensure your heat is staying in your home is to make a quick check of all of your exterior doors each day. Sometimes a rarely used door can only be partially closed, providing a large vent for your home's heated air to escape, taking possibly weeks for anyone to notice.

3. Close the doors and vents in unused rooms

By closing the vents in rooms you don't (or don't frequently) use, the heat will instead be rerouted through the rest of your home, using less heat overall. Also be sure to close the doors to these rooms to limit the heat transfer from the rest of your home into these rooms. For extra savings, you can also block underneath the doors.

4. Have a window air conditioner? Take it out for the winter

The insulation around window AC units can leave quite a bit to be desired. Even a more flush fit will still never compare to actually just closing the window. Of course this is a situation where one should be very careful (and enlist a little help), but it can make your home's insulation properties much more efficient.

The greatest thing about the list above is that you don't need to be an expert to do any of this, and these are the things you can knock out with almost no effort. For savings of up to 10%, 20%, or even higher, it's a no-brainer way to keep more money in your pocket while staying warm.
