There are four steps separating you from a custom built home computer that has exactly the hardware you want.
Why Build? There are many reasons you might want to build your home computer.
* I like to build my own computers because I demand, a reliable computer. * A faster computer than if you would buy a pre-built computer. * I can build my own for much less than it costs me to buy a custom computer with the same hardware.
If you can help your son put together a lego kit, I'm certain you can build your own computer.
Step 1 - Pick out your computer parts. Choose any computer part you like, I start with the motherboard and CPU and go from there. Check the reviews on all of these components to make sure other users just like you and me are happy with the reliability and performance of that part. On the major hardware components, you'll also check the benchmarks. Why? If you can get 2 parts for the same price and both are rated great but one is a bit faster I think the choice is pretty clear what to choose, right?
Step 2 - Assembly. Putting together a computer is fairly straight forward, it's actually probably the easiest step. Put the motherboard in the case, install cpu and heatsink. Add the RAM, then the hard drive, and finally a disk drive. Install the jumpers from the case to the motherboard. Then just connect the power from the power supply to all the components and you're done.
Step 3 - Boot up the computer and set up the CMOS or BIOS. This is the small piece of software that comes with the motherboard that simply tells the motherboard how to talk to the other pieces that you connected to it. Most hardware is auto detected. Usually you just have to change the date and time, unless you're overclocking or setting up a raid.
Step 4 - The last step is installing your operating system. Usually this is Windows. After entering some basic information, the setup will start taking anywhere from 30 to 45 min, after which time you answer some final questions and then you're at the desktop.
