When you are planning your party, don't forget to think about the photographs and the party movie. It's easy to forget to take those important shots, or capture the footage when you are up to your eyes in party games, and drink runs. But, if you plan this along with the rest of your party, you will not fail to capture those precious memories.
If you can, get someone to volunteer as party photographer, or camcorder person. Think about the moments you would like to capture, for example, the greeting of the party guests, the opening of the gifts, the party table, or the blowing out of the candles. Make a list of these moments and discuss it with your designated photographer and/or camcorder person. If the camera person is unfamiliar with your camera or camcorder, give them a quick lesson before the party starts. And make sure they remember to take the lens cap off!
Make sure that your camera and camcorder batteries are fully charged, that your flash unit is working. Check that you have enough film, or memory space available for your photographs and footage. Spares are always useful to have just in case.
A photograph of the party group makes a special party favor for your guests. If you plan to give this out at the end of the party, make sure you have enough photo paper and ink in your printer, and build in a little time in your party schedule to print and dry these. Make a party album for your birthday child, or make a party DVD. This may not be too exciting for them at the moment, but they will love to look back on it when they are older.
