How To Choose The Right Model Train Scale

There are plenty of different model train scale sizes to choose from, before making your choice it's important to know a few things about them. Anything from the size to the accessories you can use for them can play rather large roles in which scale you decide to build.

Many hobbyists have a tendency to prefer using the smaller model scale sizes. Two of the most popular scales of this size are the Z and N scales. The Z scale has a ratio of 1:220 and the N scale has a ratio of 1:160. The major advantage to making a model train scale of this size is their ability to fit well into spaces that are more confined. However they can be extremely difficult to make, especially for anyone with large hands or those who have physical and visual disabilities. They also require a lot of attention to detail and are not ideal for accessories. Many different people enjoy the smaller scales, but more often than not, women tend to prefer them more than men do.

The medium sized scale is generally considered the most popular and practical of the model train scales. The most commonly used model train scale of this nature is the HO. This scale is considered more practical for the everyday hobbyist than other scales for a few different reasons. One of the reasons is the fact that they can be used in almost any space, since it has a medium ratio of 1:87. This is also the most ideal scale for using accessories. It's very easy to fit a considerable amount of accessories and additional scales without running out of space.

When it comes to making scale model trains of a larger nature, there are generally two that are commonly used. The first is the O scale. With a ratio of 1:160, this large scale is only practical for the hobbyist who has a larger available space to use for their model train scale. The other popular model is the G scale. The G scale model is extremely larger than the other scales with a ratio of 1:24. Finding accessories for these models may be slightly more difficult than the HO, but there is plenty of room to compliment the models with accessories and additions. The size of the train will always play a significant role in determining which one is right for you. With this knowledge of the different scales and the help of your local hobby shop dealer you will be able to choose the scale you need with ease.
