How To Create A Custom Photo Pendant Necklace

From hinged lockets to carved cameos, human faces and jewelry have long been a match made in sentimental heaven. The tradition has been popular throughout history and continues through current generations, offering individuals a simple and stylistic way to keep loved ones close to their hearts at all times. But before you head out to purchase expensive lockets and chains, you should know that you can easily create your very own custom photo pendant necklace at home, with the aid of a computer and a few choice craft supplies.

Supplies:

A PC with image editing software, printer and scanner

Glossy printing paper

Stamped metal pendant setting

Craft glue

Casting resin

Scissors

Jump rings

Missing dishes & measuring cups

Necklace chain

Step 1 - Measure out the size of your photo and the pendant setting with the aid of an image editor. This can be accomplished by placing the setting on your scanner next to the photo and scanning both at the same time. Then, you will be able to assess the sizes of each and create an oval that is accurately sized in the editor. An oval drafting tool should be used to achieve the best possible results. Next, an outline of the setting should be created to be used as a guide for resizing the image and framing the oval shape's inside border.

Step 2 - Once you've got your photo resized the way you like it, print a copy on glossy photo paper and cut out the image. Make sure that when printing, you choose the highest possible resolution available.

Step 3 - The picture can now be glued with craft glue to the backing. For a smooth application, brush on a very tiny bit of water on the back of the photo and onto the setting for your custom photo pendant. Basically, you want to slightly moisten any area where you will applying the glue-- it will help it to adhere more smoothly and tightly. Before the water dries, apply a light layer of craft glue to both surfaces, and lay your photo onto the setting. If you make a mistake, you should have enough time to readjust. Allow to dry completely before proceeding to the next step.

Step 4 - Check out the instructions on the crafting resin packaging and mix accordingly. Measure as accurately as possible and stir.

Step 5 - Apply some of the resin to the pictures front facing side. The amount you use should depend on the type of look you want for your project. For example, you may decide to add just enough resin to provide your photo with a hard outer layer, or you may opt for a larger amount, resulting in a rounded, thick bubble over the top. Whatever way you choose, the resin will stiffen in the size and shape you choose to apply it in.

Step 6 - Give the resin ample time to dry, keeping it clear of any dust or dirt. Leave it in a safe area and avoid touching it with your hands. Any fingerprints, smudges or foreign particles will remain in the resin once it has dried completely.

Step 7 - Add a jump ring through the hole at the setting's top and attach a necklace or chain chord.

A custom photo pendant is a great gift for family or friends who wish to keep their memories close. Photos of loved ones, of yourself, or even of the receiver, can bring back a time and a place they'll want to wear close to them for years to come.
