How To Create A Website That Converts
35% of visitors to one of my websites visit only one page and spend less than 10 seconds on the site. And this is for a specific niche business; self storage. A year ago 60% left in less than 10 seconds. Simply changing the headline to one that powerfully states what the site is about made a huge difference. Immediately following up with bullet points that gave visitors reasons to remain on the site and find out more helped too. 2. Are You Attracting Visitors Who Will Take Action? Many people use the internet to help them to find out more about a product or service before they take action. As they learn their searches become more specific. People considering self storage often start by searching for "storage". Soon they may look for "furniture storage" before finally searching for "furniture storage in Glasgow". The visitor who searched for "furniture storage in Glasgow" is ready to take action. Those that searched for "storage" are probably not ready to act. High converting websites use these "ready to take action" keywords in their headlines and copy. 3. Using One Landing Page Destroys Your Conversions. The internet is all about speed. People expect immediate results. They are lazy. Don't expect them to search your site for what they want. Most websites have one landing page, the home page. Everyone is sent to this page, whether it's right for their search or not. For example, consider a visitor who searched for "climate controlled wine storage" and they land on a self storage home page. They then have to click on climate controlled storage and then wine storage. Every click increases the chances that they'll leave. They are much more likely to buy if they land on the climate controlled wine storage page. Use a unique landing page for your most important keywords, then optimise these pages for the search engines. 4. Write Your Website From Your Customer's Perspective. You must immediately engage with your visitors. That means writing from their perspective. Tell them what your website will do for them. Give them reasons to stay. Don't fall into the trap of writing about your company. Your visitor wants to quickly know how they will benefit from investing their time on your site. 5. Don't Lose Visitors By Making Them Click. Web designers love short web pages. Many hate the idea of visitors having to scroll down a page. They'd much rather visitors clicked for more information. The trouble is that with every click you lose engagement and you lose visitors. Longer copy works. My conversions leapt when I put more, relevant information on the page. 6. Keep It Simple. The moment a visitor is ready to act it must be crystal clear what they need to do next. Don't make them search for a buy button. Don't expect them to complete a long order form. Don't make them search for your contact details. Keep it simple and watch your conversions soar. 7. Test, Test And Test Again. The simple truth is that you will never get your website right first time. And in reality you should always be testing for improvements. Google provides a great tool called website optimiser. It allows you to test 2 versions of the same page. Another version of the tool lets you test even more options at once. Depending on your traffic volumes you will quickly learn which version works best. You can then start another experiment to try and beat your previous best. In this way you can dramatically improve your conversions. Article Directory: http://www.articledashboard.com Rob Shorten is a Website Conversion Expert.
