How To Get Over Your Fear Of Public Speaking

In the past public speaking was considered an art that very few could master. The truth is with a little effort anyone can become a great public speaker. Our fear of speaking in public stems from how we perceive ourselves and how we think other perceive us. In essence it's a fear of what others may think of us. Once we get past our own insecurities speaking in public is actually easy and quite fun. There are many way to get help with public speaking without it costing your first born. Practice makes perfect and these helpful tips can help you to become a great public speaker.

Get over your need to be perfect, If you are able to carry on a conversation with another person you can speak publicly. When speaking to an individual we are rarely worried about that person's preception of us so we are able to express ourselves freely. Think of it as a talk with someone on a subject you are familiar with. Although it may be a crowd of people try to focus on one or two people in the group and mentally speak to them. This has always been a big help with public speaking for some of the public speaking pioneers. You don't have to be perfect your audience realizes you're human. The last thing your audience wants is for your speech to be mechanical. Bring them into the conversation, make them a part of the speech.

Don't over prepare, It has been proven that the human attention span doesn't extend beyond 20 mintues. Try to encapsulate the main points you want your audience to get within that time frame. While you want to give your listeners as much information as you can. You can also give them to much information which would hindering them from grasping your key factors. Try to pick 2 to 3 main points and focus on them throughout your speech. The rest of your speech should relate back to those key points in a natural way.

There are several web sites and great books you can read to help with public speaking, but the best way to learn is by trial and error. Every opportunity you have to speak in public take it as a means of practice. Speaking to a small group of  church members or to the parents at PTA is a great way to gradually build up your skills and courage.
