How To Get Rid Of Skunks With A Skunk Trap

Nobody really wishes to use a skunk trap but if you come across one then you will be left with no choice. Skunks are part of the weasel family. They sleep during the day and are characteristically lively from evening through night. They inhabit in dark places, usually under the ground. Sometimes they may also live in lumbar piles, stumps or under a building. Skunks eat insects and rodents helping us get rid of them. On that note, however, one is not at peace with them around because as part of self-defense, they release strong odor. In fact, their presence is sometimes detected with this odor.

The moment you figure out a skunk in your home, ensure that you fill all the holes in your garden or backyard with mud. Skunks love darkness so remember to light up all the dark areas of your house to prevent it from entering. They are known to be foolish and it is very easy to trap them so rush to get a trap.

There are two types of traps and these are called gravity door trap and spring-loaded trap. In a gravity door trap, the door can be opened from a distance with a pole or stick. It closes with the force of gravity when the trap is sprung. A spring-loaded trap needs to be operated manually. While the gravity door trap is cheaper than a spring-loaded trap, getting the skunk out of the trap is difficult.

Once you bring home a trap, place bait in it. The best bait food is peanut butter, canned or fresh fish, crisped bacon, and insect larva. Place the trap at a place where you see it the most. Wrap the trap with a cloth to make it dark. The dark cage will attract it sooner.

After the skunk is trapped, ensure to set trap in an open space so find an easy escape route. If it feels less threatened then it is less likely to spray. If possible, transport the trap to a far off place and release it so it doesn’t come back. If you handle it carefully, you can transport it without releasing the odor.

Skunks are a menace and spread deadly diseases like rabies and plague. It is very important to get rid of skunks as early as you spot them. While there are many ways to do so, using a skunk trap is by far and large a humane way.
