How To Skin An Elk

Elk are very majestic animals and their hides are just as valuable as their antlers to some hunters. We`re going to go through the steps of skinning an elk because skinning and elk is not an easy task. Just as hunting elk and packing out your elk are not easy tasks either. Most would agree that elk hunting all around is difficult but very rewarding and worth every second.

1. If it`s possible which most times it`s not try to hang your elk from a tree or cut a hole through the tendon on the hind leg and hang it up or by the neck as best you can.

2. Make your first cut near the hock joints and knee. Make sure you`re using a sharp knife and cut up from the hock joint to the body of the elk. Also make sure you`re cutting thin so you don't damage the meat in the process.

3. With your sharp knife make a shallow cut all the way around the neck making it easier to remove the hide from the upper body of the elk.

4. Now split the hide the down the center of the elk all the way. At this point in time you should've already gutted your elk so you shouldn't have much to cut at the ends of the elk.

5. Now take hold of the neck skin and start to pull down firmly using a skinning knife to help cut the spots that won't come with your pulling. If you happen to start from the hind quarters all you have to do is loosen the skin that`s around the legs and pull firmly.

6. At this point just continue pulling and trimming the hide in spots that won't come with your pulling of the hide. To get a better grip on the slippery skin, first fold the hide and make sure you're only grabbing hide that has hair on it and not the membrane side of the hide.

7. Now when you've fully removed the hide place the hide - hair side down on the ground so you don't get dirt and other unwanted critters on your elk skin. Wipe the skin (membrane side) with a towel and apply a thin layer of salt or borax and fold it up hide facing outside and take it to your taxidermist or tanner asap.
