How To Upsell And Increase Your Sales Using This Shopping Cart Tip

Everyone has heard the saying, "Would you like fries with that?".

It’s called an upsell, a “sales technique whereby (one) attempts to have the customer purchase more expensive items, upgrades, or other add-ons in an attempt to make a more profitable sale.” (Wikipedia.com).

Recently I was offered a brilliant upsell. We were at the mall, ordering lunch and a lemonade, when the clerk asked me this:

"Would you like a large drink instead? It's 50 cents more and twice the size!"

Wow, I thought, that's a good upsell! So I asked her, “How many people go for this?”

She told me 75% of people take the upsell at the point of ordering and get the large size. She went on to say that they raised the price of the small drink just so they could say that phrase to the customer. The regular used to be $1.75 compared to the large, which was $3.00. Pretty clever, huh?

But upsells don’t belong only to the fast food industry. This tactic can be highly profitable to an internet business. Amazon.com, for example, is a master at it. Have you noticed that, when you order a book at Amazon, their website always suggests another, similar book that you might want to add to your purchase?

If you are like most of my clients, you would love to configure your shopping cart so that it can handle this profitable strategy.

There are many different ways of how to upsell to your customers. You need to take into account your business, your products, your market, and your level of aggression, since some techniques are more pushy than others.
