How To Use Sky Lanterns Safely

Sky lanterns are a great way to add fun to a special occasion. In addition to being a fun and entertaining activity, watching the sky lanterns as they float into the night sky is a spectacular event. The glow from the sky lanterns provides a beautiful backdrop than can be seen for miles. However, there are some who are hesitant about using sky lanterns because they are unsure of how to properly use them or they are not sure if they are really safe. The good news is that sky lanterns are perfectly safe. However, as with everything, they need to be used properly. If you understand the simple safety precautions sky lanterns are the ideal addition to any occasion.

First, check the weather conditions before launching sky lanterns. Sky lanterns should not be used during inclement weather or when it is especially windy outside. Under best conditions sky lanterns should be used on still, clear evenings. This will provide maximum floating time and will ensure the lanterns do not drift into trees or buildings causing damage to them. If it is rainy or windy, save the sky lanterns for another day.

Next, make sure the area where you want to launch them is clear from obstruction. It is not a good idea to launch sky lanterns in areas that are heavily treed or where there are tall buildings. Instead, choose a clear area free from fire hazards and tall structures. A good rule is to ensure there is at least thirty metres of clear space for launching.

In addition to being in an unobstructed area, make sure there are no restrictions where you are for using sky lanterns. Some parks will restrict the use or number of sky lanterns allowed. Pay particular attention to areas near the water or harbour as well as air fields. Sky lanterns may be seen as a distress signal and should not be used near these areas without permission. You should take care to be at least five miles away from an air field.

Also, check the sky lantern itself for any damage. If the sky lantern is damaged in any way it may not work properly and cause a hazard. So, if you find a damaged lantern discard it and use another one. You should store them in a dry place for maximum safety and long lasting use. Make sure children are properly supervised around sky lanterns and that only adults light the fuel cell. When you light it, also take care that you do not have flammable clothing on.

When you take proper precautions and adhere to the safety rules, sky lanterns are safe. You should always be responsible and use sky lanterns as directed in areas where their use is allowed. When you want to celebrate a special occasion, sky lanterns can add a beautiful element to the event. A few simple safety precautions can ensure your enjoyable event is spectacular.
