How Valentine’s Day Came To Be

Valentine’s Day is known to be a special for lovers. This special occasion is associated with exchanging romantic, funny and beautiful gifts for a person’s special someone. For the ladies, the usual gifts for women consist of flowers, boxes of chocolates or perfume. For the men, most women choose to give gifts like chocolates and aftershave. Still, the question remains, when did this special occasion start? Why is it celebrated on the 14th of February?

Originally, Valentine’s Day was not meant to be the day of expressing one’s love or devotion to that person’s special someone. In fact, it used to be a day for recognizing some Christian saints who are known collectively as Valentine. In 1969, the Catholic Church even considered eleven different dates to pay homage to martyrs named Valentine. It was later on that the date February 14 was used to honor all of them. In the United States, Valentine’s Day was declared a national holiday in 1849 according to the Graham’s American Monthly. At present, Valentine’s Day is celebrated in different countries all over the world, but on a different date.

Valentine’s Day is a day for giving your special someone presents that should really be different from your Christmas presents. In the Arab countries, this special day for love is celebrated on February 17 and it is known as Sepandarmazagan. In China, this special occasion occurs on February 14 as well. It has become a tradition for men to give women flowers and chocolates. It is followed by a festival wherein the women show off their domestic skills to impress the men. In South Korea, they have a unique tradition as well. Koreans have two different dates for Valentine’s Day and these are one month apart. During February 14, women give their men chocolates. A month after, on March 14, men return the favor by giving sweet treats that should not contain chocolate. Those who are not lucky to be in a relationship during those two dates get a special day one month after. On April 14, Koreans celebrate Black Day. It is a special day for single men and women. According to tradition, these single ladies and gentlemen eat black noodles at a restaurant. Though these people did not get the usual presents, they at least get a special day and a special treat. It is the first time if ever for single people to even have a special day.
