It has been told that one of the reasons why teaching jobs have feminine face and still remain many problems and questions is low salaries. It was mentioned, however that there are some other reasons which were historically established in society and, therefore are very hard to destroy.
One of such historical reasons was patriarchal society where teaching job was the only available social post for women, and this post was not paid well as it was males’ responsibility to bring money. We now have values and attitudes that have greatly changed during the last century and there is a need to help people develop and reform their roles. So what can we do for teachers?
We can review teaching education structure so that only the best candidates can be attracted. We can complicate entry requirements in order to raise professional level. We can change our attitude to teaching job as a conservative system which should not be struck by any enthusiasts. We should raise teacher’s status so that society would know not everyone can become a teacher. We should accept changes in well established and stable images and attitudes and we should celebrate diversity in teaching profession. We should raise teacher’s salaries so that they will concentrate in competition and be really interested in having the best learners. Having raised salaries we would witness even the best brains choosing teaching as their first choice even at our universities; thus further improving the status quo of the profession.
We would encourage teachers to defend their rights to be highly valued and respected social class in order to respect themselves and be sure our children will be good and happy members of society.
