How Do You Achieve Employees To Utilize Common Sense And Do Like They Are Told?

I hear this from countless businesses. They get that health and safety is “just common sense in the end”, and they're betting that there must be some discipline (doing as one is advised) surrounding accident avoidance. However most companies do not seem to know ways to get both of these ideas connected mutually and transferring. It’s just like linking a train to a carriage.

Primary I'll speak a little about ‘common sense’. In its simplest shape it is just like, ‘it’s not advisable to go around striking individuals in the head, if they don’t deserve it!’ and ‘stealing money off older people is certain to get you in to a lot of trouble’. However when it gets a little more complicated it begins to fade a little in value. By this I really mean that it won't always apply when you find yourself working with the day to day factors we perform when we are at the job. Some of the factors completed in businesses as an example are definitely not common sense (really don't get me going!), so how are we able to expect workers to be pushed by an unwavering adherence to it!

So what we can take from this is that we cannot place common sense on a pedestal. It depends a lot about what you do, the place you come from, how you are actually raised and how you've been qualified and prepared, and in all probability a whole lot more. So what can we can put in it's spot?

Another definition of wise practice is that certainly, there are principles, basic ones through which we have learned to get on moderately good with each other. If generally there are not universal and globally enforceable rules of common sense then it involves composing another far more beneficial number of guidelines by which we will live plus perform with each other Within this Work area!

Finally a bit about DISCIPLINE

It’s pretty frequently viewed as a bit ‘not politically correct’ nowadays. I dont agree. I define self-control as ‘Anything we carry out that is good and of value either to ourselves or others we do by means of the disciplined application of our skill’. It’s just like whenever you become a member of the army, a great deal is actually made of discipline and for really good purpose. People get killed quicker if you do not comply with the instruction “keep your head down”!
Exactly the same principle applies when constructing a frame on a property. If the boss says “don't, under any circumstances, attempt to jump across the void in which the stairs will be put”, he’s saying it due to the fact he’s looked at it and knows from experience that it’s too far to jump and if you fall you will hurt yourself (he’s probably done that!). So those who are disciplined will not jump and for that reason will not fall. Simple? However those people who are not, will and could NOT fall - this time! However the more often they jump the more likely they are to fall. It’s the odds.

So exactly how should we link them? Well, I believe that the RULES or methods we apply must make sense to the people who will use them. This means that a) we should write, or otherwise communicate the guidelines in ways (and languages) that our workers will understand about the things which will hurt them and b) the rules need to be simple, straightforward and easy to implement BY THE EMPLOYEES. It’s no good asking them to read the HSE Act is it?. K.I.S.S.
