How Should You Package Your Content?
However, picking your product topic is just the start of a series of decisions that will determine your success as a product creator. One of the first decisions you need to make is how you will package your content. This is an important decision to make early on because it will determine how you will create your product. There are four basic choices – physical products, eBooks, reports and membership sites. Here are a few considerations about each. Physical products are not used as much by online marketers, but they can be a good choice for the right market. Online these are often referred to as “home study courses.” One of the major benefits of going the physical products route is that you can have a higher price point. However, you will need to pay for the production of the physical product so your profit margin percentage won’t be as high as it is with digital products. Typical physical products include printed books, audio CDs or DVD videos. eBooks are among the most popular type of product sold online. They are normally longer than 30 pages and can go all the way up to 200 or more page. They are appropriate if you have a large amount of training to deliver or need to cover a variety of information. eBooks can have mid to high price ranges, depending on your niche. You can also package them with videos, audios and supplemental training to increase your price point and offer more value to the visitor. If you don’t have enough material to support an eBook you can create a short report and sell it. Short reports can be anywhere from 5 pages up to 20 pages. They give a laser focused view on a particular topic. For example, an ideal topic for a short report would be “How to Buy More for Less at Garage Sales.” If you have a lot of different ideas that are closely linked, you can package them as a series of short reports and sell them individually or as a group. Finally, if you have a lot of knowledge on a particular topic and feel that you can provide month after month of content, then you can create a membership site. The main benefit of a membership site is that you get paid again and again from the same group of people. Multiple members pay you each month to have access to the information. Some membership sites offer weekly or monthly content. Others host forums that people can participate in. Yet others have private blogs where they post the information. Your membership site’s structure should depend on your niche, but there are tons of options to choose from. Your product delivery system will be the key to whether or not your product succeeds, so be sure to look into what works for your niche before you begin.
