How The Economy Is Impacting Consumer Wine Buying

There has been virtually no aspect of the economy that has remained untouched by the current economic climate, and this trend certainly extends into the wine industry. Buying trends have changed dramatically in the past year or two, and this is impacting retailers, restaurants, and other sellers of fine wines. Even wine websites are noticing a dramatic shift in buying trends, and this shift is certainly working in favor of low price, but high quality wines.

While buying the highest priced wine on the menu was the hot thing to do for quite some time, the economy has forced many to reconsider their spending habits. It is unfortunate for the industry, but for many consumers, wine is considered a luxury and the expensive vintages are often among the first things nixed from the shopping list. The news hasn’t been all bad, as many shops and restaurants have seen a dramatic rise in sales of lower priced wines, particularly those under fifty dollars per bottle. This has led many to discover a number of wines and vintages that they might never otherwise have tried and is helping to put some winemakers on the map.

For restaurants, catering to consumers in this economy means offering smaller options. This doesn’t just mean a selection of lower priced wines, however. Many restaurants now offer half bottles of wine, and a much greater selection of wines are being sold by the glass. Some restaurants are even eliminating corkage fees and offering special promotions that offer discounted wines on a certain night. Finding ways to keep consumers interested in wine has proven difficult, but many shops and restaurants have come up with marketing and promotional strategies that are proving to be incredibly effective.

The impact of the economic climate on the wine industry is certainly noticeable, but many makers and sellers have found excellent ways to circumnavigate issues of big spending and consumer reluctance. Offering lower priced wines, wines from unfamiliar regions, and a wider range of by the glass options has proven tremendously beneficial, and promotional deals that interest more people in coming in for a glass or bottle has helped to spark sales as well. Selling a product that is regarded as a luxury in a tough economy is a hard job, and the truth of the matter is that many in the wine industry have done a far better job than many would have predicted.
