How To Boardslide

Today we will explore how to boardslide on a skateboard. A boardslide is when you ollie onto something with the bottom of the board sliding along it (hence the name), and then getting back off and rolling away. This is usually done on the rail of a staircase or a curb.

To begin with, when you are just learning boardslides, start out with something kind of safe and easy like a curb. Move up to staircase rails when you are much more comfortable with it.

The surface that you are attempting to boardslide on needs to be slick enough to slide along it, so if that surface is not naturally slick enough on its own, you may need to wax it first. Metal surfaces, like staircase rails, usually won’t need it, but a rough surface like a curbs might. Skate wax can be purchased at any skate shop, but if you don’t have the money for that, just use a candle.

Approach the object side by side. Do not attempt to approach it diagonally, or even worse, side by side. The reason for this is that you want to keep your momentum moving forward, and if you ollie onto an object approaching it sideways, your momentum will throw you off the other side.

Ollie onto the object just as you would anything else, only the object here is to land the underside of your board, preferably the dead middle, on the object. Once you ollie, slide your front foot towards the front of the board, and by the time you land on the object your front foot should be on the front truck, or the nose may be even better, for better balance while sliding.

Once sliding on the object, the first thing to watch out for is to try to keep the object in the dead middle of your board and not too close to either the front or back truck, or you will tip over. Other than that, the name of the game is balance. You will feed to keep your balance directly above the board at all times. If you lean back too much, your board will shoot out in front of you. If you lean forward too much, your board will come to a stop and you will go flying while your board will stay put. If you lean to much to the left or right, you will tip over. And unfortunately, falling off while attempting a boardslide can be very painful, especially if it is on a staircase rail.

Now for the boardslide to officially be over and properly executed, you will need to land it and roll away. There are two ways to do this. One is to ride the object until it ends, and just turn 90 degrees as you fall off, keeping your board level, and ride away. The other way, if you want to get off early (you may may have no choice if you find yourself losing speed and momentum), push down on the tail and lift the nose up and over the rail (or whatever) and 90 degrees turn and ride away.
