How To Boost Your Vocabulary Easily

Would you like to have an improved vocabulary? Here are some of the many benefits you’ll receive when you improve your vocabulary. When you boost your word power, you’ll do better in school because you will understand more concepts. You may have more success in your career and in your social life because you’ll sound smarter to others, and you’ll be a better communicator.

If you have to make a speech or if you are teaching others, you will be a better speaker when you have a good vocabulary. If you understand the meaning of a lot of words, your brain cells will make more connections with each other. It’s all those extra connections between brain cells that make you smarter.

A good vocabulary will not only improve your ability to communicate with others, it will also help other people to communicate with you. When you know the meanings of a lot of words, other people don’t have to "dumb down" what they say so that you can understand it. They will be able to communicate with you at an advanced level, knowing that you understand what they are trying to say.

Most of us don’t use very many words on a daily basis. A lot of people get by with just a few thousand words in their vocabulary. That’s a shame, because the English language has hundreds of thousands of words. How many of them have you discovered? How many more words are just waiting for you to find them and use them?

So, how can you go about improving your ability to use words effectively? Should you be reading the dictionary on a daily basis? If reading the dictionary is something that you really enjoy, then you should continue using it as one method of boosting your vocabulary.

However, there are many other ways to increase your vocabulary effectively. It’s easier to remember new words if they already are playing a role in our lives. Each time you come across a new word you don’t understand, why not make a point of looking it up later? If you let new words slide by without looking them up, there is a good chance you will never learn their meanings.

While you are looking up new words in a dictionary, why not take a peek at one or two of the other words on the same page. You might enjoy learning the meaning of some of them too.

Make a point of watching for new words every day. In the course of listening to the radio, watching television, or reading the paper, you may encounter several new words every day that you don’t fully understand.

If you aren’t coming across any new words in your reading or when watching television, you may be guilty of not giving your brain cells any challenging work. Try reading something a little bit more challenging, or make a point of watching some interesting documentaries. Or, you could simply spend time with someone who uses a big vocabulary when they are speaking.

Once you have looked up the meaning of a new word, or once you have had the meaning of a new word explained to you, start using it as part of your vocabulary immediately. Start saying a few sentences out loud using the new word you have just learned. This will help fix the meaning of the new word in your mind.

It doesn’t take long to increase your vocabulary if you make a commitment to boosting your word power. By adding just two new words a day, at the end of a year, you will have added over 700 new words to you vocabulary! In ten years, you could add over 7,000 new words!
