How To Breakdance: Backflip
Of all the breakdance moves listed above, the most physically-feasible for an "average" human being may appear to be the backflip. However, it's the natural fear mechanism built into human beings that protect them from harm that prevent non-disciplined humans from performing this move. Our instincts build the fear inside us, and our reason fabricates imaginary consequences. So what's the best way to get over the fear of a backflip? Soft ground. This will shut down the pain mechanism of your brain, and, thus, your fear as well. Soft ground can be anything that's comfortable for you: snow, grass, foam, water, or even a "crash mattress." Before attempting to do a backflip or any breakdance move, make sure you have a spotter. The spotter should know how to actually perform the backflip. Preferably, your spotter should also be able to teach the backflip and actually flip you over in case you're still scared. Once you have a spotter and comfortable ground to work with, it's time to actually perform the backflip. 1. Stand up straight. 2. Swing your arms back and launch your torso straight down so you are in a crouched position. 3. Swing your arms up and have them go straight into the air. At the same time, push, go from the crouched position into a standing position. Keep your feet together. This should give you a boosted "jump" into the air. 4. Practice steps 1-3 a few times until you get a comfortable lift off the ground. 5. Quickly tuck your knees to your chest, and swing your arms to your knees. 6. Stay in this tucked position and USE YOUR EYES to spot the ground. 7. As soon as you start seeing the ground, start opening your body up to land in a standing position. 8. You must be landing standing to know you have the correct form. You should not land crouched or on your knees. Breakdance is all about form. Keep practicing to perfect the timing so you get a standing landing. Once again, breakdance is all about form, form, and form. When you get more advanced with breakdance, you can go for double backflips, wall flips, gainers, and more. Have fun with learning how to breakdance and enjoy the backflip!
