How To Cancel Your Ebay Bid And Why Or Why Not

There are a lot of good things about eBay and like all great things there are rules. These rules apply when you may be thinking about canceling your bid. When I first thought about canceling a bid I thought how novel, can you really cancel a bid. I mean these auctions really move fast some times, but the gist of the whole deal is that you may not retract or cancel your bid.

There are certain conditions that must have occurred and that you must comply with to be able to cancel your bid of which I will outline for you here directly.

Moving along here this is going to seem a bit contradictory and somewhat confusing but bear with me. One of the situations under which you may cancel a bid is that you made a typographical error, i.e. you fat fingered in something other than what you meant such as entering $5.00 when you really meant to enter $0.50 instead. When this occurs you must immediately enter the correct amount after you retract the erroneous bid. To be certain eBay does not consider you changing your mind as being a typographical error, I just thought I would put that out there if you decided to go there.

You may get an out if the seller had during the auction changed the description of the item while the auction was going. An example of this would be the seller described the item as a 'New Looking iPhone' and when the auction was close to finishing the description changed to 'Picture of a New Looking iPhone' (a case like this really ended up in Judge Judy's Court).

The last reason for retracting a bid would be if you tried to email or call a seller when the auction ended to discuss some information concerning the item and such but you got no response at all so you may cancel your bid. When you are exercising your desire to cancel or retract your bid bear in mind that there are some time restrictions in doing so but I'd advise you to refer to eBay's policy for the tables concerning the time tables.

The last likely option you have of canceling a bid if you contact the seller asking that your bid be cancelled which would go something like this, Mr. Seller I know that I just won your auction for $359.00 but I didn't really realize it but I didn't mean to put a bid out like that for a Barbie Doll without a head. I'm sorry but would you allow me to retract my bid? No, well that is just wrong!

Bottom line is the seller has all right to what is rightfully his and per eBay's bidding policy is that all bids are binding unless the item was prohibited by eBay policy or illegal by law. Do not take the attitude of I am not going to take it or buy it even though I did win the auction. Fact is a number of these types of decisions have resulted in litigation and the individuals hammering it out in a court of law. Want to venture a guess on who won?

Bottom line, when bidding or selling on eBay carefully and diligently read the policies of eBay being sure you understand them. I mean who like reads that stuff anyway? Them whom end up being hauled into court!
