How To Choose The Best Soundproofing Materials

So you’re getting ready to start your first soundproofing project. As you conduct your initial research you’re going to find that there are a myriad of different soundproofing materials to choose from. All of these materials fall into three main categories – sound absorption, sound blockage, and materials that can do both.

Materials that absorb sound are usually used in situations where you do not want sound to leave a room. They’re commonly found in home music studios and theatres – places where escaping noise may bother those in the surrounding areas. Sound absorbing materials are usually either perforated or porous. Examples include glass, carpet, fiberglass, and sometimes even bricks.

Soundproofing materials that block sound prevent outside noise from entering a space. Woods, resilient channels, mass loaded vinyl, and steel are examples of this type of material.

Hybrid materials, or those that can both block and absorb sound, include Green Glue and mass loaded vinyl. These materials offer a certain level of versatility. They’re effective, reasonably priced, and because they serve a dual purpose will limit the amount of materials you need to purchase.

As you start your sound proofing project you’ll need to keep a couple of things in mind. First you must make sure that you are using high quality soundproofing materials. When it comes to soundproofing, cheaper isn’t always better. The second thing to keep in mind is proper installation as shoddy work will only make your noise problems worse.

Consider the following before you start soundproofing:

• Don’t use any type of soundproofing material that claims you need to install it with nails, screws, or anything else considered a “rigid fixing”
• Wherever possible, use resilient (or flexible) materials
• Make sure that every are you choose to soundproof is airtight as spaces where air can creep through are also spaces where sound can creep through
• Make sure you use a good acoustical caulk to seal up any of the seams around your project
• Check the area for sources of flanking noise.

Soundproofing isn’t nearly as difficult or time consuming as acoustical consultants want you to believe it is. Take your time, choose the right materials, install them properly, and double check your work. Pretty soon you’ll have a soundproof room or home.
