How To Clean Your Curtains Without Ruining Them

Curtains are essential to the look and ambience of your home. When they get dirty they can make your home appear and smell like it needs to be cleaned. Cleaning them is important for the overall look and smell of your home. Listed below are instructions and cleaning tips to make your curtains fresh and clean.

The first step is to simply read the instructions for how to wash your curtains. If the instructions say dry clean only then you should not attempt to wash your curtains. You have these instructions for a reason.

Now you need to take your curtains down and remove all pins, hooks and rods. If you leave a hook or pin in the curtain it may get torn during the washing process. When you have them down and pin and hook free, place them in your washing machine.

When you are washing your curtains it is important to wash them alone and without other clothes. They need to have room to wash and move. If you feel uncomfortable with washing them in the washing machine because they are delicate, you may want to hand wash them in the sink or bathtub first time round.

It is now time to add your detergent. Because most curtains are delicate you may want to use a mild detergent and you definitely do not want to add bleach. If you prefer to hand wash then the same rules apply.

The cycle that you use is imperative to the safety of your curtains. You should use the delicate cycle and use the correct load settings comparative to your curtain size. For example, if you are washing your bedroom curtains then you would use the small load and the opposite for your living room curtains.

When the curtains are washed, either by hand or in the machine, you need to hang them up to dry. You can do this either inside or outside as long as they have air to dry in a timely manner. Even though it is not recommended you can fluff them dry in the dryer, but hanging them up is the preferred method.

There are a few tips for making this venture a success. Read your labels and follow all of the instructions. Remember that even if there is not a label that says dry clean only, if they are pleated you do not want to wash your curtains. If you have time restraints but want to make your curtains look and smell better you can put them in the dryer with multiple dryer sheets and run them on the fluff cycle for a short amount of time. This will make them look and smell better if you have to make your place look good in a short amount of time. This method will not last long term so you need to make sure that you wash the curtains shortly after using this method.
Having clean and fresh curtains will add beauty to your home and make the room they are in brighter and smell better. Cleaning your curtains can be easy and worry free if you follow basic instructions.
