How To Design The About Us Page

One of the most important pages of any custom web design is the "About Us" page, because it tells the customer exactly who it is that they are dealing with and why they should be. You will find a number of experts that feel the entire website should be all about the customer, what they fail to realize is how the "About Us" page plays into customer relations. This is the one place that you get to tell your current and potential customers exactly why you are the person in your industry to deal with. Here is where you lay the groundwork for trust and reliability.

What Should the 'About Us' Have

This page should contain everything that someone would want to know about a company when they are determining if they should do business with them. Your "About Us" page should only contain verifiable and accurate information. This isn't the place for opinions or colorful language. You wouldn't look at the McDonald's "About Us" page when deciding if you want to do business with them and they tell you the reason is because their fries taste good.? Include:

- Company details - date it started, locations, services and/or products you provide
- Business or Industry related organizations/societies you are a member of
- Information on the owners/founders - names, education, expertise and industry related experience
- Goal and Mission of the company
- Awards, Recognitions, Achievements - this would be an ideal place to place links to them and talk about them briefly
- Contact Information - really what you want here is a link to your "Contact Us" page where you will list your postal address, emails and phone numbers
- Customer Support - again, really you want links to the customer support areas, privacy information and any warranty information
- You may even consider stating here how your company is making an effort to be environmentally friendly

Remember, you should provide enough information on the above points but not too much that it can get misused by your competitors.

Details Presentation

You should try to gradually and efficiently educate your visitors about who you are and about your company and do it in a logical way.

- Company and Individual Data - once you know the information you plan on sharing about your company you need to decide in what order you will present it. Some businesses will put their tagline on the Home page, while the company details and members/executive information is place on the "About Us" page. You may consider offering a Fact Sheet in a pdf format that offers information on company performance.
- Photographs - people like to see who it is they are dealing with. Even if your potential customer is 1500 miles away, if they can put a face with a name and a company it offers a connection point. Puts them on a more personal level with you and your business.
- Combined or Separate - the "About Us" page is typically a separate page from the Home page, though they can be combined. It is best to talk to your professional website design expert as to what they recommend. It is considered acceptable for small businesses to combine the two.
