Temper tantrums in toddlers are unavoidable. Toddlers are bound to unleash their emotional expression of frustration and anger. Though most of time stressful for parents, these temper tantrums are part of a normal toddler’s development. It is important for parents to know the causes and ways on how to handle temper tantrums in toddlers for them to reduce the parenting stress.

Toddlers exhibit temper tantrums because they cannot express accurately in words what they want and what they feel. When parents fail to understand what their toddlers are trying to express, temper tantrums will erupt as toddlers will feel the frustration of not getting the things they want. Toddlers are also learning to become independent and would like to do things on their own. Parents might stop them which can cause a toddler to be angry. Toddlers might become frustrated in doing things on their own due to their physical limitations which can lead to temper tantrums outburst. Normally toddlers will also throw temper tantrums when they feel hungry, tired, sleepy or just getting their parents’ attention.

First thing parents must do in times of temper tantrums in toddlers is to always stay calm. You cannot stop your toddler’s emotional outbursts with your own version of yelling. Raising your voice will not help. Look for what triggered the tantrums and provide the necessary actions. Your toddler might be hungry and need to eat right away.

Ignoring a tantrum can also work well. When a temper tantrums in on the maximum, your toddler will not listen to your reasoning. By paying attention to the tantrums, you will give your toddler the thought that they can get your full attention by throwing tantrums.
