How To Freestyle Like A Pro Rapper
1. First and foremost, you must exercise. I can almost hear you now: "Huh! Exercise won't improve my freestyles! There's plenty of fat dudes who rap! Take a look at Fat Joe, Biggie and Heavy D!" True. But exercise keeps your lungs strong, which means you can freestyle longer without struggling for air. How many rappers have you seen live that were a complete disappointment due to breath control? I rest my case. Before they got famous, Outkast used to practice their verses while rapping, which helped them perform live. Basically, if you want to kick a dope freestyle rap, you need air. I can't get more basic than that. 2. Keep your eyes skyward when rapping. Perhaps this sounds a bit odd, but this trick has got some science to it. When you look skyward during a freestyle, you're addressing two parts of your brain: your memory and your creativity. Cops have known this for years: if someone looks up to the right while talking, they are more than likely lying (because they are accessing their creativity), whereas if they look to the left they're probably telling the truth (because they are searching their memory). How can this help your freestyles? By keeping your eyes skyward, both your memory and creativity are stimulated. I tried this technique with a group of students and they instantly improved their freestyle. Try and see for yourself. 3. Memorize rhyme schemes. If you want to learn how to freestyle, the more words you know, the better. But it's not just words, it's rhymes that are important. Choose a five interesting words like "expression" or "inhalation" not simple words like "cat." Look up those five words in the rhyming dictionary and write down five rhymes for each word. This leaves you with a list of 30 words. Memorize all of them so the next time you kick a freestyle rap you'll have plenty of new words to work with. 4. Freestyle your surroundings. Here's how to freestyle rap through a room: walk around and pick an object to rap about, making sure to incorporate your rhyme schemes into them. Remember to look up if you start to get stuck! 5. Pass the mic sooner than later. So many rappers try to freestyle for longer than they should. No one remembers how long you freestyled for, they'll only remember any dope lines you said. Focus on quality over quanity. Even if you spit a wack freestyle rap, it's better to pass it off quickly before you really start to sound bad. Remember Abe Lincoln's quote "It's better to be thought a fool than open your mouth and prove it." Try to end on a dope line, but if isn't happening, pass it anyways! These five steps will help you learn how to freestyle rap like a pro.
