How To Hire Experienced Plumbing Contractors
Start your search by asking family and friends who live in your area. These people have likely needed plumbing contractors at some point and will be able to give you first-hand advice about their experiences with local plumbers. A plumbing supply store may also be able to give you a few suggestions. Also, be aware of your plumbing needs. There are two kinds of plumbing contractors – one that takes care of clogs, leaky faucets and plumbing emergencies and another that helps install plumbing and HVAC units in new homes or additions. This means that someone who specializes in new plumbing probably won’t be the best choice to unclog your kitchen sink. When you have the names of a few plumbing contractors, give them a call. Ask each about the licenses and certifications they hold. Also ask whether the plumbing contractors are insured – the insurance should cover both workman’s compensation and liability. Don’t forget to call the Better Business Bureau to inquire about complaints filed against the company. When you have narrowed the list to two or three contractors, ask each for an estimate and materials list. Ask about the scope of the project and get full payment terms in writing. Make sure the contractor plans to use quality materials, including brand name parts that come with manufacturer’s warranties. Make note of all the brand names your plumbing contractors talk about and do a little research on these items. Quality materials will cost more upfront, but are worthwhile in the end. Ask each contractor for a list of references. When speaking with the references, ask whether the plumbing contractors went over budget, if they did go over budget ask when and how they notified the reference. Of course, inquire about the quality of the work as well. Don’t forget to find out about service guarantees. If the contractors install a new piece of equipment, make sure they will fix a problem should one arise. Ask about the contractor’s safety commitment. Accidents can happen no matter how careful the contractor and his or her workers are. Inquire about how the contractors will handle any on the job accidents, as well as their plans to prevent injuries and property damage from occurring. Pricing should be a consideration, but it should not be the final decision maker for you. Compare prices among all the plumbing contractors you call, but remember if you are only shopping for the lowest price, you’ll get what you pay for! Finally, ask about the contractor’s clean up plans. You don’t want to be cleaning up after the contractor when he or she leaves or be worried about filings and oil spilled on your floor. Finding the right plumbing contractors can seem like a difficult process, but a little research will go a long way to giving you a good experience.
