As a result they get little traffic and make almost no money from their sites. Here are the top three tasks you need to perform to successfully increase your traffic.

Since we are discussing increasing traffic for little or no cost, we are limiting ourselves to organic traffic. That is, traffic that comes from the search engines because your site ranks high for certain search terms. We will not consider pay per click or other paid traffic techniques which can be quite costly.

The first reason people don't see massive traffic to their site is they are competing for the wrong keywords. Either the keywords are too competitive and their site will probably never appear on the first page of the search results, or they are targeting keywords that get very few searches.

So, the first important task you must perform is to choose the keywords each page of your site targets with care. You need to target keyword phrases that get moderate amounts of traffic but have relatively few websites competing for those keyword phrases. The techniques for keyword selection are well documented on many websites so we don't need to dwell on the methods here.

At this point you may or may not already have a domain and website. If you don't have a domain, you should try to purchase a domain name that contains the most important keyword phrase you want to target. An exact match with no other words, letters or numbers is preferable.

Your third task will be to build links to your site from other sites. These backlinks are valuable because search engines determine the importance of your sites, at least in part, bu the number of backlinks your sites have. These backlinks can be built in a number of ways. Some relatively easy ways over which you have full control are article marketing and blog commenting.

Article marketing involves writing articles and distributing them to various article directories. Try to focus your articles on terms or subjects related to your website. Add a resource box with links to your website. Use your important keyword phrases as the anchor text for these links.

Blog commenting is another way to build links. Here you add your relevant comments to blogs and place a URL to your site where it asks for your website. This will provide a backlink to your site.

Keep writing articles and commenting on blogs to further increase the backlinks to your site. You efforts here will pay off handsomely after a short time.
