If you are new to online poker, you need to learn how to make bets. First and foremost, you need to understand the positions. Never, ever bet out of turn, although most online casino software is programmed so that something like that does not happen. Betting will always go “clockwise” around the table, so keep that in mind whether you are playing online or in real life.
Playing on the internet is pretty easy. All you really have to do is click on the corresponding button. For instance, if you want to bet, you will click on the “bet” option. If you want to raise, you can click on the “raise” button, and so forth. Hopefully, you understand the differences between betting, raising, folding, and checking. If not, then here is a brief overview:
Betting or “Calling”
This simply means that you want to put enough chips into the pot that meets the current betting amount. If it is $5, and you want to meet the wager, then you will put $5 worth of chips into the pot. Of course, online poker rooms make this easy by displaying the current betting amount, the number of chips you have, and the option to place the bet by clicking on the corresponding button.
Raising
If you have a pretty good hand and you are feeling brave, you can raise the betting amount. However, you cannot bet and raise at the same time. This is referred to as “string betting” and it is not allowed. Do not try to trick your opponents in this way. There are other ways to bluff, and this is not one of them. If the current bet is $5 and you are feeling pretty lucky, you can raise it to $10. If your opponents want to continue playing in the current game, they must then bet $10 or check.
Checking
To check simply means you do not wish to bet or fold. It is basically an “inaction.” You do not want to contribute to the pot, but at the same time, you still wish to continue in the game. If you check, you can still call (bet) or raise later on in the round. You can think of checking as betting zero dollars.
Folding
To fold means you give up on the post. You throw your cards down and surrender your claim to the prize. If you put any money in, you cannot get it back. When you fold, you make it easier on another player to win all the money, including what you contributed. Folding is usually done whenever a player is not confident in his or her hand and does not think the outcome of the game will be in his or her favor anyway.
If you do not have a very good hand, you should fold before spending too much money. Many people make the mistake of not knowing when to quit, and end up losing all their money as a consequence.
Now that you have an idea of how to play poker, you can start practicing! Play some free games first and see how well you do. Whenever you go up against actual opponents for a chance to win real money, make sure you know when to quit! Fold when your cards are not all that great, and raise when they are.
