How To Make Your Own Winery

Most wine lovers have a common long life dream to have their own wineries. However, it’s one thing to dream about it, and another to actually do something to make that dream come true. Starting a winery is expensive and involves hard work and knowledge in manufacturing, marketing and selling wine.

Here are things that you will need in order to start your own winery:

1. Investment capital
2. Winery facility
3. A contract with a grape farmer
4. Equipment
5. Machinery
6. A business strategy
7. A target market
8. Experienced consultants
9. Partner (optional, but recommended)
Here is a procedure of things that need to be done:

1. You should have an investment; a start-up capital. The cost of starting a winery depends on the type and size you want. You may want to start your vineyard with investment partners and professionals, which is advised by experts that you should do, especially if you have no experience whatsoever in owning and running a winery.

2. Apply for proper state and federal licenses. You have to apply at least 6 months before your anticipated sales date. It is important that you do this, because the production, sale and distribution of alcohol are controlled.

3. Choose a business strategy. There are 2 business models used in owning wineries, to sell wine. One is the “People to the Bottle”, which is where people go to your vineyard for a winery tour and tasting of your wine. The other business model is known as the “Bottle to the People” where you are the one who brings the wine to customers, i.e. the wine is transported to retailers via the “3-Tier System” from producer, to distributor, and then finally to retailer. (Tip: If you choose the “Bottle to the People” strategy, reliability in the quality, quantity and wholesale price of your wine is important because retailers and distributors depend on these factors.)

4. Once you have chosen a business strategy, start to improve on it. Also, create a wine marketing strategy based on the business strategy that you chose. After doing so, you will then know the financial decisions you have to make for your business.

5. Decide on a target market to further increase your chances of having a successful winery business. If you want to attract other wine lovers and experienced wine drinkers, then you have to create wine that has a new, unique, and definitely delicious taste.

6. If you don’t want to grow your own grape, find a good grape vineyard and settle a contract with them, so you can purchase the grape that you want to use to make your wine. It is best to hire an expert to help you on this, so you will not make any costly mistakes, and the process will be faster.

7. Start to go shopping for the equipment and machinery you need for your business. Also look for and hire potential employees that can work for you in your business. It is, again, advisable to hire an expert to help you in purchasing equipment and hiring employees.

8. Visit several different wineries and meet the owners so you can learn about their business experiences. Also ask them on advice on how to run a successful winery.

9. You must be ready and prepared to run a successful winery business. Read various books about wineries, join state or national wine association groups and attend winery seminars and events so that you can increase your knowledge even more and probably even become a wine expert yourself.
