How To Motivate Your Team: Development And Attention

The driving force behind reaching your goal effectively and quickly is to motivate your employees well. It is an obvious part of business, but one that is sometimes overlooked by leadership teams. To achieve optimum motivation levels, an employee needs to be: happy, involved, respected, improving and earning.

Although there are other potentials to be added to this, these are five of the best ways to motivate an employee. It’s not necessarily a promotion that’s on offer that would motivate a certain employee as everybody wants different things and, according to a study, almost three-quarters of workers would not want their manager’s job.

Development

Always make sure that your employee feels like they are learning something from day to day. If they feel like this then they are more likely to come to work motivated, and with a smile on their face, as they develop their career.

In all areas of life, we should always be learning. You have to move forward, and whilst some people are happy to just receive their paycheck, many aren’t satisfied by that. We are built to learn, and that is what employees should be doing. By developing employees you are improving your output and business quality.

Attention

You have to show people individual attention. Some employees like private praise, whilst others like to be praised in front of others. This is something that is a judgment call for managers, however, something that isn’t a judgment call is the need for individual attention – you can reap so many rewards from this.

There are multiple things you can do to show individual attention. Go out for lunch, ask for their ideas, tell them how they are performing in work, find out what their favorite and least favorite parts of the job are and see what they want to learn next.

Your job is to get the best out of them and, to do this, they need to feel that their job is satisfying and enjoyable. Make sure that you are doing all you can to make it this way. If person X wants to see how the senior team works, and you feel he’s ready, let him sit in on a meeting or if person Y wants to take a course, send them off. Happy employees make for happy results.

Some experts believe that all effective managers have one certain thing in common – psychological investment. What this means is that they believe in their team and they find ways to spend time with them and raise their self-esteem, motivation and performance. Recognition, for many people, is the best form of motivation.
