How To Prevent Credit Union Scams

Credit union members are just as likely to fall victim to a scam as people who do their banking at a regular bank. If you have recently changed from a bank to a credit union it is important to remember that they have in place similar security checks to banks. For instance the credit union will never phone or email you to request important information such as personal ID numbers or details about your account. You should never disclose any pin numbers, card numbers or log on details to anyone, even if they claim to be credit union staff.

To ensure you have not been a victim of credit union fraud, make sure you check your statements carefully as soon as they arrive and query any transactions you are not sure about. Make sure no one can see when you are using your credit union PIN for a transaction. Shred your receipts or any other document that shows your name and address before putting them in the bin.

It is really important to keep your computer free from viruses or any other malicious thing that could steal your credit union details. Make sure you install and update the appropriate spyware and anti-virus software and keep it updated all the time. One that updates automatically is good. If you get phishing email delete it immediately.
If you lose your credit card or chequebook or they are stolen, it is important to contact your credit union immediately to prevent unauthorised transactions. Remember that a thief will not waste any time in trying to access your account.
