How To Straighten Your Hair

Straightening your hair with a flat iron is pretty straightforward but it does have its tricks. There’s more to it than plugging your flat iron in and clamping the plates over your locks. With correct usage, you can enjoy sleeker, smoother hair for hours without putting your locks at risk. For the best outcome, buy a professional flat iron that uses either ceramic or tourmaline in it’s heating elements (pure, not coated) so that your hair can be in safe hands.

If you want long lasting straightness follow these steps to gain maximum results.

1. Wash your hair and shampoo it as usual. Remember to use conditioner! Clean and conditioned hair is best for straightening, since grease and dirt can build up on the heat plates and eventually affect the performance of your straightener in the long run.

2. Apply heat protective serum to your hair, spreading it over your palms and rubbing it in, smoothing your hair along its length. The amount depends on the length and type of your hair. If you have heat protective spray, use that. This is to minimize the heat damage caused by your hair straightener.

3. Using a hair dryer and paddle brush, start drying your hair, brushing it as you go before you start straightening. Set the setting to medium until your hair is about 80% dry. You’ll experience frizz and dryness but don’t worry; you’ll soon have sleek locks!

4. If your hair is medium to long length, use clips to separate your hair into sections. Starting at the front, choose a small portion of hair and clip the other sections up.

5. Grab your hair straightener and press the section of hair through it, starting at the roots, pulling down the entire length in a smooth motion and applying continuous pressure until the hair at the end falls away. Keep movements smooth and uninterrupted.

6. Repeat the previous step with all the sections until your hair is completely straight. With larger sections you might have to run the straightener over two or three more times.

7. Once you’re done, you can finish the style by blending the ends with your hair straightener to get rid of the separation caused by the sectioning clips.

You should now have a head of silky, sleek and frizz-free hair that will last for ages. To complete and conserve your style, finish off with a light application of spray.
