How To Survive Unpacking

Everyone is different. Some love to pack, others loathe it. They’d rather unpack than pack. However, for other people, it is unpacking that they hate. Either way, you can always hire someone to do the job for you. But it is better if you do the unpacking yourself because then you will be the one to arrange things so you know where everything is. Here are some tips to help you out:

Plan the structure of your house and each room first before unpacking, so you know where to place each item. If you are the very organized type of person, you could create another checklist for unpacking to help you.

Most movers would advise that you unpack per room. However, it is better to unpack the boxes that contain items that are essential since emptying boxes take quite a long time. For example, start with the boxes that contain your clothes, kitchen utensils, items needed in the bathroom, and of course, bedroom needs like bed sheets and covers. All the other things like decorations can come in last because it is something that you don’t really need right away.

Start arranging the really big furniture like cabinets, closets, bed frames, shelves, televisions, and so on. You don’t want amounts of gigantic furniture scattered around your house. It is much disorganized and would eventually give you and your family a hard time to move around the house.

Start setting up electrical appliances around the house, for instance, the television set (home theatre system if you have one), refrigerator, washing machine, computer, and so on. For women, you can ask your husband to do that particular task, or you could hire experts to do it for you, if you have the budget.

Take your time in unpacking. You don’t have to finish everything in one day, two days, or even a week. As long as the important items are unpacked, you can take as long as you want to unpack the rest. This is very convenient especially if you have a job.

If you have a list that you made before moving, it would be a good idea to refer to that while unpacking. Cross out from your list the things that you have already unpacked so that you won’t be confused later on and also you will still know which items are still in the boxes. That list could also tell you whether something is missing.

If you have a family, get your spouse and kids to help with the unpacking. It would make the process a lot quicker. Allow your kids to decorate their own rooms, if they are old enough. It would give them a sense of control.

Once you have all the essential items unpacked, you can now start unpacking the remaining and it is best to do it room by room. It would be easier if you had your boxes labelled beforehand, so you know which box goes in which room, and so on. It is up to you which room you can start organizing, however many people have suggested starting with the living room because that is the first room that your visitors will see.

Once you have emptied out a box, throw it away immediately, or put it aside neatly so you only make one trip to the garbage bin after unpacking.
